Use the situational crime prevention framework when you face a well-defined, recurring crime problem tied to identifiable places, products, or situations and you want practical, fast-acting interventions that do not depend on changing offenders. It pairs naturally with problem-oriented policing and the SARA process, and with crime script analysis for mapping where in an offense to intervene. It is less suited to crimes driven overwhelmingly by deep individual or social causes with weak situational components, to highly mobile or determined offenders who can readily adapt, or when the only proposed measures risk serious displacement or unacceptable side effects on legitimate users of a place.

Deterrence works by raising the expected punishment for crime — its certainty, severity, and swiftness — to discourage offending through the criminal-justice system. Situational crime prevention instead changes the immediate environment so the crime is harder, riskier, or less rewarding to attempt in the first place. SCP does use perceived risk of detection, but its emphasis is on engineering opportunity out of situations rather than on threatening sanctions, and it acts at the level of places and products rather than the justice response.
