The third-person effect survey measures W. Phillips Davison's 1983 observation that people tend to believe persuasive media messages affect other people more than themselves. The perceptual component documents this self–other gap, while the behavioral component tests whether the gap leads people to support censorship, corrective action, or other responses aimed at protecting the supposedly more-influenced others.

When to use it

Use the third-person effect survey when your question concerns perceived media influence and its consequences rather than actual persuasion — for example, why people support restricting content they themselves feel immune to, such as misinformation, harmful advertising, violent media, or pornography. It is well suited to studying censorship attitudes, content-regulation support, and corrective behaviors. It assumes respondents can and will report perceived effects on self and others and that self-enhancement motives operate. It is less appropriate for socially desirable or beneficial messages (public-service announcements), where a first-person effect may appear instead, and it does not measure real persuasion — only beliefs about persuasion — so claims about actual media effects require separate evidence.

What is the difference between the third-person and first-person effect?

The third-person effect is the tendency to perceive that media influence others more than oneself, producing a positive self–other gap. The first-person (or reverse third-person) effect is the opposite — perceiving greater influence on oneself — and tends to appear for socially desirable or beneficial content, such as public-health messages, where people are willing to admit being affected. The valence of the message largely determines which pattern emerges.

Does the third-person effect predict real behavior?

It predicts behavioral intentions and some behaviors, most notably support for censorship and content regulation, on the logic that people want to protect supposedly more-vulnerable others. But the behavioral component is empirically weaker and more variable than the perceptual gap, and it is confounded by how much people dislike the content. Studies that control for attitudes toward the message provide the cleanest tests of whether the perception itself drives restrictive responses.

Why does social distance matter?

The perceived gap between effect on others and effect on self generally grows as the comparison 'other' becomes more socially distant — from close friends to average people to distant strangers. This social-distance corollary is one of the most reliable moderators of the effect and is consistent with a self-enhancement account: it is easier to see remote, abstract others as gullible than people we know well. Manipulating the referent's distance is a standard way to test the mechanism.
