Hyperlink network analysis (HNA) treats the hyperlinks among websites as social and communicative ties and applies social-network methods to the resulting web graph. Developed within webometrics by Park, Thelwall, and others, it reads a link from one organization's site to another's as a signal of endorsement, affiliation, or attention, and maps how actors — governments, NGOs, companies, media — are connected online.

When to use it

Use hyperlink network analysis when you want to study relationships, alignment, and visibility among organizations or websites as expressed through their linking behavior — for example, mapping a policy coalition, an advocacy field, or a national web sphere. It suits questions about online prestige, brokerage, and community structure among institutional actors. It assumes that hyperlinks meaningfully signal social or communicative relations and that the relevant links can be crawled completely. It is less appropriate when links are sparse or driven by navigation rather than endorsement, when the modern web's shift toward platforms and apps means relationships no longer flow through site-to-site links, or when crawling is incomplete or blocked — all of which threaten the validity of the inferred network.

What does a hyperlink represent in this analysis?

A directed hyperlink from one site to another is interpreted as a social or communicative tie — most often a signal of endorsement, affiliation, attention, or resource-sharing. An inbound link resembles receiving recognition or prestige, analogous to a citation. But links are ambiguous: they can also be navigational, commercial, or even critical. Sound hyperlink analysis therefore treats links as a proxy that requires interpretation and, ideally, validation rather than assuming every link means endorsement.

How is hyperlink network analysis related to PageRank?

Both treat the web as a graph of links and use link structure to infer importance, and both echo citation analysis. PageRank is an algorithm that assigns each page an authority score based recursively on the authority of pages linking to it. Hyperlink network analysis is broader and more interpretive: it imports the full social-network toolkit (centrality, community detection, prestige) and treats links as social ties among actors, aiming to understand relationships and communities rather than to rank pages for search.

Is hyperlink network analysis still relevant given the move to platforms?

Its applicability has narrowed. The method assumes communication and relationships flow through site-to-site hyperlinks, but much online interaction now happens inside walled platforms and apps that do not expose traditional hyperlinks. For institutional web spheres — governments, NGOs, organizations that still maintain interlinked websites — HNA remains informative. For everyday public discourse, social media network analysis has largely supplanted it, and the two are sometimes combined to study how the open web and platforms interconnect.
