The Relative Specialization Index and the closely related Activity Index measure how much a country, institution, or other unit concentrates its research effort in a given field relative to a global benchmark. The Activity Index, popularized by J. Davidson Frame in the 1970s, compares a unit's share of its own output devoted to a field against the world's share of output in that field: a value above 1 means the unit is more active (more specialized) in that field than the world average, and below 1 means less. András Schubert and Tibor Braun's relative-indicator framework formalized this family and introduced bounded, symmetric variants and 'relational charts' that pair publication activity with citation 'attractivity'. These indices are the scientometric analogue of revealed comparative advantage in trade and are central to national and institutional research-profiling.

When to use it

Use the Relative Specialization and Activity indices when you want to characterize the thematic profile of a country, institution, region, or funder while controlling for differences in size and in field size: mapping national research strengths, benchmarking an institution's portfolio against the world, tracking how a system's specialization shifts over time, or informing science policy and priority-setting. They are appropriate when you have publication (and ideally citation) counts cross-classified by unit and field from a consistent database and classification scheme. They are less suitable when field classifications are coarse or unstable, when output counts are too small to give reliable shares, or when interest is in absolute capacity rather than relative emphasis — the indices deliberately remove size, so they say nothing about how much a unit produces, only about its comparative orientation.

What does an Activity Index of 1 mean?

It means the unit devotes exactly the world-average share of its output to that field — it is neither specialized nor de-specialized there. Values above 1 indicate the unit puts a larger-than-average share of its effort into the field (revealed specialization), and values below 1 indicate a smaller-than-average share. Because it is a ratio of shares, the index controls for both the unit's overall size and the field's global size, so the neutral benchmark is always 1 regardless of how big the unit or field is.

Why transform the index to a symmetric scale?

The raw Activity Index is asymmetric: under-representation is compressed into the interval from 0 to 1, while over-representation stretches from 1 to infinity. This makes a unit twice as active (index 2) and half as active (index 0.5) look unequal in magnitude even though they are symmetric deviations. Schubert and Braun's transform maps the index onto a bounded interval, often from minus one to plus one with zero as neutral, so positive and negative specializations are comparable and the values are better suited to averaging, statistics, and plotting.

How does the Activity Index differ from the Attractivity Index?

The Activity Index is built from publication counts and measures how much a unit works in a field relative to the world. The Attractivity Index is built from citation counts and measures how much attention the unit's work in a field attracts relative to the world. Schubert and Braun designed them to be used together: plotting activity against attractivity in a relational chart shows whether a unit's areas of high effort coincide with its areas of high impact, distinguishing busy-but-low-impact fields from genuinely strong ones.
