Author bibliographic coupling analysis (ABCA) maps the current intellectual structure of a field by linking authors through the references they share. Introduced by Dangzhi Zhao and Andreas Strotmann in 2008, the method extends classic bibliographic coupling — which couples two documents when they cite the same earlier work — up to the level of authors: two authors are coupled to the degree that their bodies of work draw on the same references. Because coupling is fixed at the moment of publication and reflects what authors are reading and building on right now, ABCA captures the active research front and the intellectual affinities among currently productive authors, complementing author co-citation analysis, which instead reflects a field's slowly accumulating, more retrospective base of cited authorities.

When to use it

Use author bibliographic coupling analysis when you want to map the current, active research front of a field at the level of authors — which presently productive scholars are working on related problems and how they group into specialties. It is the natural choice when timeliness matters, because coupling is established as soon as papers are published and does not need to accumulate, making it suitable for recent and fast-moving areas where co-citation would still be sparse. ABCA requires access to the full reference lists of the publications in scope, which can be data-intensive. It is less appropriate when you want the deep, historically validated intellectual base of a discipline (where author co-citation is better), when reference data are incomplete, or when severe author-name ambiguity cannot be resolved. In practice ABCA and ACA are frequently run together as complementary 'front' and 'base' views of the same field.

Both map authors, but they use opposite citation relations. Author co-citation links two authors when later papers cite them together, so it reflects the field's accumulating collective judgment and emphasizes established, highly cited authorities — a retrospective 'base.' Author bibliographic coupling links two authors when their own works cite the same references, a relation fixed at publication that reflects what authors are currently building on — a forward-looking 'front.' Running both gives a fuller picture: the base of a field and its active edge.

Why normalize coupling strength instead of using raw shared-reference counts?

An author who publishes prolifically has a large reference profile and will therefore share many references with others simply by volume, not by genuine intellectual affinity. Normalizing — for instance with the Salton cosine, which divides shared references by the geometric mean of the two profiles' sizes — produces a similarity comparable across authors of very different productivity. Without normalization, the most prolific authors appear artificially central, distorting the map and its clusters.

Why is bibliographic coupling considered more timely than co-citation?

Coupling is determined at the moment of publication: as soon as two authors' papers exist with overlapping reference lists, they are coupled. Co-citation, by contrast, only forms once subsequent authors cite the pair together, which takes years to accumulate. This makes author coupling responsive to the newest work and well suited to mapping emerging and fast-moving research fronts, whereas co-citation lags and foregrounds the field's older, well-established literature.
