Formation process analysis is the framework for identifying the cultural and natural processes that transform materials from their living, systemic context into the archaeological record we excavate. Developed by Michael Schiffer within behavioral archaeology and codified in his 1987 Formation Processes of the Archaeological Record, it insists that the archaeological record is not a fossilized snapshot of past life but the cumulative product of how things were discarded, lost, reused, and disturbed (cultural or C-transforms) and how they then decayed, moved, and mixed in the ground (natural or N-transforms). Because every deposit has been filtered and rearranged by these processes, sound inference about past behavior requires first reconstructing the formation history of the record and correcting for it. Formation process analysis is therefore foundational to interpretation, linking excavation, geoarchaeology, and taphonomy.

Use formation process analysis whenever you intend to draw behavioral inferences from archaeological deposits and assemblages — which is to say, in almost all interpretation — because every deposit has been shaped by formation processes that must be accounted for. It is especially important when interpreting spatial patterning (activity areas, floors, abandonment), when comparing assemblages whose preservation or depositional history may differ, and when distinguishing in situ behavior from redeposited or disturbed material. It is the essential complement to excavation, geoarchaeology, and taphonomy. The framework is less a standalone technique than an interpretive discipline, so it depends on physical evidence from stratigraphy, micromorphology, and faunal and artifact analysis; its inferences are uncertain where formation history cannot be independently reconstructed, and it can be misused to explain away any pattern if not constrained by data.

What is the difference between C-transforms and N-transforms?
Both are formation processes that move materials into and within the archaeological record, but they differ in agent. Cultural formation processes, or C-transforms, are human behaviors — discard, loss, reuse, recycling, abandonment, and deliberate disturbance like digging or plowing — that determine how and where materials enter and are rearranged in the record. Natural formation processes, or N-transforms, are environmental and biological agents — decay, bioturbation, and transport by water, wind, and gravity — that act independently of human behavior. Schiffer argued that both must be identified before any deposit can be read, since each shapes what survives and where it ends up.
Why can't we read an excavated floor as a snapshot of past activity?
Because the materials on and in a deposit have been filtered and rearranged by formation processes between the living moment and excavation. People typically remove their refuse to secondary dumps, scavenge and recycle materials, and lose small items into cracks, while after abandonment natural processes decay organics, move objects downslope, and mix layers through bioturbation. What remains is the cumulative residue of all these transforms, not a frozen instant. Formation process analysis insists on reconstructing this history first, so that interpretation is based on the original behavior rather than on the artifacts' transformed final positions.
How does formation process analysis relate to taphonomy?
Taphonomy is the study of what happens to organic remains — especially bone — between death and recovery, and it can be seen as the part of formation process analysis dealing with the natural and some cultural transforms acting on biological materials. Formation process analysis is the broader framework covering all materials and both cultural and natural transforms. In practice they are complementary: taphonomic analysis supplies detailed evidence on differential preservation and modification of faunal remains, which feeds into the wider reconstruction of a deposit's formation history that the framework requires.
