Ceramic Typology

Ceramic typology is the systematic classification of pottery into named groups — wares, types, and varieties — on the basis of shared attributes of form, fabric, surface treatment, decoration, and manufacturing technology. Because pottery is durable, ubiquitous, and changed rapidly in style, it is the archaeologist's most powerful tool for ordering sites and layers in time and for linking material to cultural traditions. As Prudence Rice's standard sourcebook sets out, a typology is built by recording consistent attributes, partitioning the assemblage into defined types, and arranging those types in a nested hierarchy that can then be quantified and compared across contexts. The resulting type frequencies become the raw material for relative dating, seriation, and the interpretation of trade, identity, and chronology.

When to use it
Use ceramic typology whenever you have a sufficiently large and well-provenanced assemblage of pottery and need a framework for relative dating, intra- and inter-site comparison, or cultural attribution. It is the foundational step before frequency seriation, before sampling for compositional analysis, and before any narrative about trade or chronology built on ceramics. A formal typology is most valuable where pottery styles changed appreciably over the period of interest and where attributes can be recorded consistently across analysts. It is less informative for very small assemblages, for highly standardized mass-produced wares with little variation, or where the research question concerns provenance or technology directly — in those cases typology should be paired with petrographic or compositional methods rather than relied on alone.

Are pottery types discovered in the data or invented by the analyst?
Both, in a sense, but archaeologists today emphasize that types are analytical constructs. The clustering of attributes in a real assemblage is genuine — potters made recurring kinds of vessels — but which clusters become named types depends on the attributes the analyst selects and the research question. Rice frames type definition as a deliberate, explicit choice of diagnostic attributes, not the uncovering of natural kinds. A typology built to track chronology will differ from one built to study function, even on the same sherds. This is why classifications must state their criteria and why two valid typologies of the same material can differ.
How does ceramic typology date a deposit?
Indirectly, through type frequencies. Because pottery types come into and go out of fashion, the proportions of types present in a deposit indicate which chronological phase it most resembles, and types shared with a dated reference sequence allow cross-dating. Renfrew and Bahn describe this typological and cross-dating logic as a cornerstone of relative chronology. It yields relative, not absolute, dates: it tells you the order and rough period, which can then be anchored to calendar time by radiocarbon or other absolute methods applied to associated material.
How does typology relate to seriation and to compositional sourcing?
Typology is the prerequisite for both. Frequency seriation orders assemblages chronologically using the changing relative abundance of types, so it needs a consistent typology first. Compositional and petrographic methods, by contrast, address questions typology cannot — where a pot was actually made and how — and are usually applied to sherds already assigned to wares or types. In practice typology, seriation, and provenance analysis are complementary: typology supplies the framework, seriation refines the sequence, and scientific sourcing tests whether visually defined wares correspond to distinct production origins.
