Spot Observation Sampling
Also known as: Spot Check Sampling, Instantaneous Spot Observation, Random Spot Checks, Spot Sampling
Spot observation sampling is a time-allocation technique in which an observer arrives at randomly chosen moments and records, instantaneously, exactly what each visible person is doing at that instant — not what they were doing before or after. Because the moments are sampled at random across the daily and seasonal round, the proportion of spot observations that fall in a given activity is an unbiased estimate of the proportion of time people spend in that activity. It turns a scatter of brief snapshots into a quantitative budget of how a community allocates its waking hours.

When to use it
Use spot observation sampling when you want population-level estimates of how much time people spend across activities and cannot feasibly follow individuals continuously for long stretches. It excels at characterizing subsistence, labor, and leisure budgets in small communities, and at comparing time use across age, sex, or season. It assumes activities are visible at the sampled moments and that you can sample enough random instants to control error. It is poor for rare or hidden behaviours that almost never appear in a snapshot, for reconstructing the sequence or duration of individual events, and where observer presence would substantially alter what people do.

Why must observations be instantaneous rather than over an interval?
Recording an instant means each behaviour is counted in proportion to how often it is in progress, not how long or how noticeable it is. If you instead recorded everything that happened over a span, long or dramatic activities would be over-counted, biasing the estimated time budget away from the true proportions.
How many spot observations do I need?
Because each activity's share is estimated as a proportion, the sampling error shrinks with the total number of person-observations; common activities stabilize after a few hundred, while rare ones need far more to be estimated reliably. Plan the schedule around the precision you need for the least common category of interest.
How does this differ from a time-allocation diary?
A diary relies on participants recalling or recording their own activities over time, which is prone to recall and reporting bias. Spot observation substitutes the observer's direct instantaneous record at random moments, trading the diary's continuous coverage for unbiased, externally observed snapshots.
