Seasonal Calendar

A seasonal calendar is a participatory rural appraisal (PRA) tool in which community members chart how key conditions and activities vary across the months or seasons of a typical year on a shared visual matrix. Rows represent variables such as rainfall, crop labour, income, food availability, migration, illness, or expenditure, while columns represent the local division of the year. By filling the cells with stones, marks, or piles whose size shows intensity, participants produce a collective picture of seasonality that reveals when stresses pile up and when slack periods occur.

When to use it
Use a seasonal calendar early in fieldwork to understand the temporal rhythm of livelihoods and stress in a community, and to triangulate accounts of food security, labour, health, and cash flow over the year. It is well suited to agrarian and pastoral settings where activities follow strong seasonal cycles and where a group can recall a typical year together. It assumes the year is reasonably patterned and that a representative group can be convened. It is less useful for understanding long-term change across years (use a timeline or trend analysis instead), for highly individualized urban schedules, or where seasons are weak or erratic.

How is a seasonal calendar different from a daily activity schedule?
A seasonal calendar charts variation across the months or seasons of a year, revealing annual rhythms such as planting, harvest, and the lean season. A daily activity schedule maps how time is used within a typical day. They answer different questions and are often used together, the calendar for the macro rhythm and the daily schedule for the micro routine.
Should I use a fixed twelve-month timeline?
No. The strength of the tool comes from using the community's own division of the year — local months, named seasons, or events such as the first rains or a harvest festival. Imposing a January-to-December grid forces local knowledge into an alien frame and loses the very seasonality you are trying to capture. Align the local units to calendar months only afterwards, for reporting.
Can the counters be analyzed quantitatively?
Only cautiously. The relative number of stones or beans in each cell shows intensity within one calendar and is best read as an ordinal pattern, not a measurement. You can digitize the values into a spreadsheet to chart the shape of seasonality, but treat cross-site comparisons of raw counts with care because the scoring is local and uncalibrated.
