Kinship Network Analysis

Kinship network analysis treats genealogies as graphs and applies network methods to study how marriage and descent structure a society. Pioneered by Douglas White and Paul Jorion's 1992 P-graph approach, it shifts the unit of analysis from the individual ego-centered family tree to the whole web of couples and parent-child links, making it possible to detect marriage rules, alliance patterns, and the circulation of people between groups that conventional kinship diagrams obscure.

When to use it
Use kinship network analysis when you have genealogical data for a population and want to study marriage patterns, alliance structures, or endogamy at the level of the whole community rather than a single family. It is well suited to detecting marriage rules, relinking, and the structural core of intermarriage in societies where individual diagrams become unmanageable. It assumes reasonably complete and accurate parentage and marriage records. It is less useful with fragmentary genealogies, for questions about kinship meaning or terminology (which call for interpretive ethnography), or for very small kin groups where structure is trivial.

What is a P-graph and how does it differ from a family tree?
A P-graph represents couples (or single individuals) as nodes and draws directed arcs from parental couples to their offspring, with sex marked on the lines. Unlike an ego-centered family tree, which is drawn from one person's vantage and grows unwieldy, the P-graph encodes an entire population's descent and marriage relations in a single graph where intermarriage shows up as cycles, making whole-network analysis possible.
How does kinship network analysis detect marriage rules?
Marriage rules leave structural traces. Prescribed marriage between certain kin produces characteristic cycles (relinkings) in the P-graph that close after a specific number of generations and cross lines in a specific way. By counting and classifying these cycles and comparing their frequency to chance expectation, the analyst tests whether the genealogy is consistent with a given rule such as matrilateral cross-cousin marriage.
How does it relate to general social network analysis?
Kinship network analysis is a specialized branch of social network analysis applied to genealogical ties. It uses the same graph-theoretic concepts — nodes, arcs, cycles, components, centrality — but adapts the representation (the P-graph) and the measures (relinking, marriage distance) to the specifics of descent and marriage, where ties are directed and constrained by generation and sex.
