Grounded Visualization

Grounded visualization is a mixed-methods analytic approach that weaves grounded-theory qualitative analysis together with GIS-based spatial visualization, so that emerging codes and maps inform one another iteratively rather than sequentially. Instead of mapping results after the qualitative analysis is finished, the analyst moves back and forth: a pattern noticed while coding interviews prompts a map, the map raises a spatial question that sends the analyst back to the text, and so on. The aim is an interpretation that is simultaneously grounded in participants' accounts and attentive to the geography in which those accounts are situated.

When to use it

Use grounded visualization when your research question is inherently spatial and meaning-laden — how people experience, contest, or move through places — and you want geography and lived accounts to refine each other rather than be reported separately. It suits community studies, environmental and health geographies, and urban ethnography where both where and why matter. It assumes you can georeference at least some qualitative material and have GIS and qualitative-coding capacity. It is less appropriate when the topic has no meaningful spatial dimension, when spatial data cannot be obtained at a useful resolution, or when small, identifiable locations make mapping an ethical risk.

How is grounded visualization different from just making maps of qualitative findings?

Making maps of findings is a one-way, after-the-fact step: you analyze the text, then illustrate it spatially. Grounded visualization is iterative and two-way — maps are analytic tools that raise new questions and send you back into the qualitative data, and coding in turn reshapes the maps. The integration happens throughout analysis, not at the end.

Do I need to be a GIS expert to use it?

You need working competence in both qualitative coding and GIS, but not deep expertise in either, and many projects use a small team that pairs the two skill sets. The essential requirement is the discipline to iterate between coded text and maps; the GIS work can rely on accessible tools like QGIS for mapping and standard qualitative software for coding.

What are the main risks to manage?

Two stand out. First, confidentiality: plotting fine-grained ethnographic data can re-identify people or sensitive places, so aggregation or masking is often required. Second, false precision and positivist drift: mapping qualitative meaning at coordinates it does not really support, or letting quantitative GIS layers crowd out the grounded participant accounts the method exists to honour.
